How to Help an Addicted Loved One
One who is addicted to alcohol and drugs is an individual who has taken the wrong path in life; they become dependent on harmful substances and abuse it thinking that they can solve their problems and make their mistakes and worries go away. But the truth is, addicts need guidance and sometimes, professional help in getting back on track to realize that running away isn’t the best answer. By abusing these substances, they don’t only ruin themselves, because when they sober up; their problems are still right in front of them. So, at the end of the day, they have not got rid of their troubles.
If you find that one of your loved ones have fallen into this miserable path in life, then it would be your responsibility to set them straight and put them back on track. The first sign in helping an addict would be by making them realize that they do have a problem. Most people would either be in a state of denial saying that they’re fine and they know what they’re doing or they would be unaware of how serious their condition is by accusing you of overreacting and making a big deal of everything.
Next, understand the nature of the addiction. Addiction should never be viewed as a problem in and of itself. It is much better viewed as a symptom of other underlying problems and deficiencies. This is why most addiction therapies are so universally unsuccessful. To cure most addictions, you must look beyond the addiction itself and deal with underlying deficiencies in coping and life management skills that have given rise to it. The best way to do this would be by taking your friend to rehab and encouraging them to stay off substances and follow a step by step program.
Also, group support and therapy could help as well. As a concern one, you should never leave your friend alone and be patient enough to walk with them throughout the journey. Never give up and always be the steady hand, guiding them into the right path and do make sure that you allow room for failing points along the way. In a long run, you would have changed the life of your loved one and possibly saved a life too.
